Tottenham’s Wembley Woes Continue

Tottenham’s Wembley nightmare continued as they lost 4-2 against Chelsea in the semi-final of the FA Cup. Spurs can take a lot of positives from the game, having troubled Chelsea on a number of occasions during the game. However, it is Antonio Conte and Chelsea who will make the trip to Wembley again for the final.

Many suggested that whoever would go on to win this game, would claim the Premier League title at the end of the season. With four points separating the two sides in the league, Spurs still have a good chance of lifting the Premier League trophy come the end of the season. The FA Cup semi-final was an energetic, frantic and exciting contest.

Two goals from a superb Willian helped Chelsea go in at the break with a 2-1. Willian opened the scoring from a free-kick, the Spurs wall did not do its job and Hugo Lloris was caught out. Sloppy mistakes from Spurs contributed massively to the result, Son being a perfect example of that – Needlessly bringing Victor Moses down in the box to give Chelsea a penalty, to which Willian converted. In between the two Chelsea goals, Harry Kane drew the sides level with a brilliantly improvised header.

After the break, Spurs continued to look threatening. A stupendous ball from Eriksen found Dele Alli who finished expertly from inside the area, got Spurs level again. Chelsea rallied, although not at their best they still troubled Spurs. Diego Costa and Eden Hazard came off the bench in the second half – It was Hazard who put the Blues ahead yet again, as Chelsea won a corner, which was cleared straight to Hazard, who thrashed into the far corner from 18 yards.

As Spurs committed bodies forward, Matic was afforded too much space on the edge of the box, allowing him to unleash a venomous strike, which flew past a helpless Lloris for Chelsea’s fourth, via the crossbar.

This game was a great advert for the FA Cup, a lot of teams dismiss the competition these days. I have always been fond of the competition, there are always shocks, every season it does not disappoint. Despite Chelsea naming Hazard and Costa on the bench, both teams fielded strong sides which is great to see.

Tottenham’s thoughts will be solely on the league for the final throws of the season, despite the result – It could just make Tottenham stronger.
