Is modern day football too soft?

In top flight football, it is rare that you see a good, strong tackle go unpunished.  This is mainly due to the reaction of the player on the receiving end. Players in the modern day era go down like a sack of spuds.  It is embarrassing to watch a player roll around on the floor pretending they are hurt.

The over reaction can sometimes get the opposition player unfairly sent off. What is actually worse, a good hard slide tackle is a dying art.  Football is a physical game, but to me it is quickly becoming a non-contact sport. Players should be punished for diving and over reacting, it is the only way that players will learn.  Many pundits have suggested that bans should be handed out to prevent it from happening in the future. I agree, bans or fines should be handed out to those responsible. Play acting should have no place in the game, it needs to be stamped out immediately.
In modern day football it is refreshing to see a referee telling a player to get up after a clean but hard challenge.  Referee’s have a tough job, it is increasingly difficult to tell when a player is actually hurt or trying to gain an advantage for their team.  Hopefully in time, referee’s will become wise to these play actors and we start to see some physicality back in the game.  For now though, we will just have to grin and bear it.
