One to Watch: Greg Rutherford

Greg Rutherford is a name that should stick in your head, no not the long jumper – I am talking about the Berwick Rangers forward who simply cannot stop scoring at the moment. At 22, the youngster still has a lot to learn, however he has the ability to reach the top.

If you want an insight into Rutherford’s attitude, look no further than on his Twitter profile. He states: “All I want to do is go out there and work hard, if I do that good things will happen, simple as that.” That tells you a lot about a player who is certainly making a name for himself at Berwick Rangers. Rutherford was born in North Shields, he started his career in Hartlepool United’s youth team on a two year scholarship in 2010.

In April 2012 the youngster was offered a professional contract, Rutherford made his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Chesterfield in mid April 2012, coming on as a late substitute in place of Gary Liddle. The striker scored his first professional goal in a 3-1 away win against Portsmouth in January 2013, Rutherford had only been on the field for 90 seconds. At the end of the 2013/14 season, Rutherford was one of four players released by Hartlepool. Before joining Berwick Rangers, Rutherford had stints with Dover Athletic and Alloa Athletic.

In October last year, Rutherford made his Berwick Rangers debut, coming off the bench to score in a Scottish Cup defeat to Hawick Royal Albert. Rutherford has scored eight goals so far this season, with six goals coming in his last six appearances. He is a player in fantastic form at the moment, Rutherford is fast becoming a key player for Berwick after a string of impressive performances. Rutherford’s most recent goal came on Saturday in a 2-2 draw with Elgin City. Rutherford will look to continue his fine run of form in front of goal against Stirling Albion on Saturday. A win for Berwick would see them close to within three points of Saturday’s opponents.

Berwick Rangers have found a real gem in Greg Rutherford, I am sure his fine form will continue for the remainder of the season. I would like to wish Greg and Berwick Rangers well for the remainder of the campaign – I will be keeping a close eye on Berwick’s games and hope to see Rutherford’s name on the score-sheet in the next few weeks.
