One to Watch: Harvey Saunders

Harvey Saunders, 19 of Darlington F.C. Scored his first goal for the club in dramatic style, heading in an equaliser in the 94th minute. He found space in the box to rise and deftly head home Gary Brown’s cross. Saunders had served an apprenticeship in the Northern League for a several clubs, scoring a number of goals.

The 19-year-old from Staindrop will look to use this as a platform and become a first team regular for Darlington. There is no reason why that can’t happen after the impact he made against Worcester at the weekend. The result on Saturday means Darlington remain in seventh place, a point outside the play-off places.

Darlington manager Martin Gray was full of praise for the youngster after the game, saying:

“It was a great ball into the box by Gary Brown for a 94th-minute equaliser and it was a great header. “He’s a great lad with a lot to learn. It was a really important goal and gets us a vital point away from home. “He’s a young boy, only 19-years-old, a game young boy who has a lot about him.“I like his desire and hunger, he’s so willing and he wants to be successful. “He’s got a lot to improve on, but his attitude is amazing and he gets goals because he gets himself into good positions.” “His pace is exceptional and it’s great that he came on and got a vital point for us. “I’m delighted for him because he’s worked hard. He’s put some shifts in in the Northern League and scored goals.”

Martin Gray’s comments should only boost the youngsters confidence even more. Saunders certainly has the right attitude and is not afraid to put a shift in. Like any young player, Saunders still has areas of his game to improve but he has fantastic potential.

The Football Fix would like to congratulate Harvey on his first goal for Darlington on Saturday. We wish Harvey well for the future, with the kind of performance he produced off the substitutes bench, I believe it won’t be long before we are writing about Harvey Saunders on a regular basis. I look forward to seeing Saunders getting some more minutes for Darlington during the remainder of the season. The youngster is definitely a player to keep your eye on.
