Benitez Plans Long Stay at Newcastle United

“I’m thinking like I will be at Newcastle for 10 years, but I must speak with Ashley”. The words said by a man planning a long stay at Newcastle United.

Next week, talks will commence between Rafael Benitez and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, regarding the future of the club. The talks will involve the ambitions of the owner and whether they match with Benitez’s own ambitions. There will also be talks regarding how much of a transfer budget will be allocated to Benitez in the summer.

Firstly, there is the small matter of trying to win the Championship title on Sunday against Barnsley. Newcastle need to match or better Brighton’s result to lift the trophy. Whatever the outcome, the main objective has been achieved – Newcastle United are a Premier League club once again.

There has been plenty of speculation and talk about Newcastle United and Rafael Benitez in recent weeks. As soon as the magpies clinched promotion against Preston North End, the national press deemed Newcastle worthy of a story again. Benitez has been constantly linked with the West Ham job, despite Slaven Bilic being in charge at the London stadium. A lot of people have tried and failed to distract and derail Newcastle United this season, to the clubs credit they have ignored all possible distractions and achieved their main objective.

It remains to be seen just how much Rafael Benitez will have to spend this summer. Benitez struck a really happy man in his interview with Football Focus, a huge relief for Newcastle United fans everywhere. Speculation will always surround a top class manager like Benitez, the important thing for fans to realise is that Benitez has a long term plan for Newcastle and he wants to see it through.

If I was Mike Ashley, during the talks next week I would give Benitez everything he wants, but also offer him a new contract to help quash speculation, a reward for the hard work of Benitez and his backroom staff. Newcastle United need stability, something that has been missing during the Ashley era. Allardyce, Keegan, Hughton, Pardew and McClaren have all come and gone during Ashley’s reign. The Newcastle owner has a real chance to put his previous mistakes well and truly behind him. Ashley needs to continuously back Benitez, something the shrewd businessman realises.

Benitez has pulled everyone together, fans, players and staff all aiming for the same thing. We haven’t had that for a long time on Tyneside and it’s refreshing to see. It would be nice to see Mike Ashley make an appearance at St James’ Park for the game against Barnsley, in doing so he will show that he is dedicated to helping Benitez turn Newcastle United a force once more.
