DeAndre Yedlin – Tottenham’s Loss is Newcastle’s Gain

It is fair to say DeAndre Yedlin has had somewhat of a crazy start to his footballing career. In 2013 he was an MLS All-Star, the following summer he was a part of the USA squad in the 2014 World Cup. Yedlin came off the bench for the USA and absolutely tormented Belgium, his stock had risen high.

After his impressive performances in the World Cup, he earned a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Yedlin did not underestimate the challenge ahead of him when he made the move to London. It is fair to say things did not go to plan for Yedlin at Tottenham despite his huge potential. The American struggled to get game time at Tottenham, as a result he was loaned to Sunderland. Yedlin started to get the minutes on the pitch, however it was not all plain sailing for the fullback, as he was substituted in the 19th minute against Watford.

With his confidence low and searching for answers, Yedlin acknowledged he must be mentally strong to become successful in the Premier League. He ordered “Maximum Achievement” by Brain Tracy, a Canadian author. By his own admission Yedlin is not a massive reader, however he wanted to do everything possible to be a success in England, such is his determined character. The book had a positive impact on Yedlin, his confidence began to grow as the game time came with it. He remained a prominent figure in the Sunderland side, from February 2016 through to the end of the season. A season in which Sunderland escaped relegation by two points.

Newcastle showed an interest in signing the USA international in July 2016. At first Yedlin was hesitant about dropping down a league, but such is the allure of Rafael Benitez, Yedlin signed a five year deal at St James’ Park. The decision to move to Newcastle proved to be the right one. The fullback settled quickly and began to flourish under the guidance of Rafael Benitez.

Yedlin was one of the stand out performers for the magpies this season, his pace was a constant threat to the opposition. Yedlin’s game has improved over the course of the season, with his work ethic he will continue to make great strides in his development as a player. Yedlin is benefiting from working under one of the best managers around in Rafael Benitez.

There is yet another challenge ahead for DeAndre Yedlin, the Premier League is tough and relentless, something Yedlin knows. The experience of long hard slog in winning the Sky Bet Championship this season will stand him in good stead for next season. Yedlin is fast becoming a fan’s favourite on Tyneside, with the exemplary attitude and fantastic work ethic the player is showing, there is no doubt that Yedlin will continue his rise in the game.

Yedlin has had to battle it out with Vurnon Anita at Newcastle this season, for a place in the starting eleven. Yedlin made 25 appearances in all competitions this season. The American picked up a hamstring injury in March before returning for the final push towards the Championship title. Winning the title with Newcastle will mean an awful lot to Yedlin, having overcome a disappointing start to life in English football. Those memories are far behind the fullback now and he can look forward to a bright future at Newcastle United.
