Dependable Dummett

Paul Dummett divides opinion amongst Newcastle United fans, you either love him or you hate him. Rafael Benitez like previous managers trusts the Wales international.

The left back has made 44 appearances in all competitions this season, he is a mainstay in the Newcastle United lineup, one of the handful of regulars in Benitez’s side this season. Dummett is not a skillful or flashy player, maybe that is why he does get so much stick from a section of the fans. Dummett is an old fashioned full back, he puts his defensive duties first. A reason that Benitez has so much faith in him, Dummett’s forward play has improved so much under the stewardship of Benitez, his crossing is far more accurate than in previous seasons.

Dummett is a local and came through the youth system, he had loan spells at Gateshead and St Mirren before making his Newcastle United debut on the opening day of the 2013/14 season. Dummett started the following season as Newcastle’s first choice left back and he hasn’t really looked back since.

It is great to see a local lad in the first team, playing week in week out. The one thing Dummett can guarantee every game is work rate, he will never leave anything on the pitch. You can see what it means to Dummett every time he steps on the pitch for Newcastle United, that’s one of the things I like about the left back.

Dummett may get a lot of stick at times, some of which I believe is very harsh. Dummett is Mr. Dependable, you know exactly what you will get from him each week, he is a consistent performer. That is why Rafael Benitez and his predecessors trust him so much. Like many others, Dummett’s game has drastically improved under Benitez over the last year, with promotion secured I wouldn’t bet against Paul Dummett starting the Premier League season at left back.

Paul Dummett is an excellent defender, he reads the game well. He has made some high profile Championship wingers look rather ordinary this season. At 25, Dummett is still learning and is improving all the time. Rafael Benitez is the ideal manager to get the best out of Dummett, which has been proved since the Spaniard took charge at St James’ Park.
