Isaac Hayden’s Calming Influence

Isaac Hayden has been a key player for Newcastle United this season, Hayden has superb in-game intelligence. The midfielder reads the game very well. The likes of Gayle, Ritchie and Shelvey have stolen the headlines at time this season, Isaac Hayden’s performances this season have not gone unnoticed by Rafael Benitez, Hayden is the Spaniard’s go to man.

When Hayden returned to the starting line-up against Leeds last week, it was no coincidence that Newcastle played arguably put in their best performance of the season. Hayden brings a calmness to the Newcastle side, he brings the best out of Jonjo Shelvey, Hayden’s presence allows Shelvey to influence the game. Hayden is not afraid of a tackle, he recycles possession effortlessly and allows the more offensive players to have an impact on the game. Jack Colback is a decent back up for when Hayden is unavailable, he plays a similar game to Hayden, However Hayden’s tempo is a lot quicker and sharper – Hayden allows Newcastle to attack more quickly and more effectively.

Hayden, like most of the Newcastle players struggled at Portman Road against Ipswich on Monday. That is understandable, with the former Arsenal man still getting his match sharpness back after an injury layoff. With a seven day rest between Ipswich and Preston, Hayden will be ready to start for Newcastle at St James’ Park, two games in a matter of days over Easter was a tall order for a player recently returning from injury.

Hayden’s influence on this Newcastle side should not be underestimated, with him Newcastle are a much better team. There is a better understanding when Hayden is at the heart of the midfield. Rafael Benitez will be happy to have Hayden back from injury, with three games left – Hayden’s return is a timely one, Newcastle are closing in on promotion and Hayden has played a key part in that. Hayden and Newcastle are prepared for one last push, with two home games out of their final three fixtures, there will be ample opportunity for a promotion party at St James’ Park.

Newcastle could be celebrating promotion come Monday, provided they beat Preston and results go their way over the weekend. With promotion comes a host of changes, Isaac Hayden will be a mainstay of this Newcastle United side for years to come. Benitez trusts the midfielder, which in itself is high praise. Hayden won promotion with Hull City last season and is on the verge of back to back promotions. Arsenal’s decision to let the Englishman go in the summer is a puzzling one, Arsenal lack players with fight, something Hayden has in abundance. Arsenal’s loss is Newcastle’s gain and Hayden is thriving under the stewardship of Rafael Benitez.

Hayden is consistent and it wont be long before Gareth Southgate takes notice. Hayden’s performances have really impressed me this season, he has flown under the radar a little but his influence on the side is as big as the likes of Gayle and Shelvey.
