Newcastle Look to Confirm Promotion

After a disappointing result and performance from Newcastle United against Ipswich on Monday, Rafael Benitez is determined to make sure his team bounce back against Preston at St James’ Park next week.

Benitez was furious with the way his side performed against Ipswich, Newcastle were a shadow of the side that battered Leeds United for 90 minutes on Friday evening. Luckily for Benitez and Newcastle, Derby County did them a massive favour after scoring a late equaliser against Huddersfield Town. Huddersfield’s result means Newcastle can gain promotion with a win against Preston, should Huddersfield and Ready both lose at the weekend.

The Ipswich performance was in my view, the worst performance under Benitez. However, there is no need to panic, promotion is still in Newcastle’s hands. The magpies have hit a bad vein of form at the wrong time of the season, Benitez had said for the majority of the season just how vital April is. Everyone connected with Newcastle United will be hoping the club can join Brighton in the Premier League next season as soon as possible. It must be pointed out that in 7 out of the last 10 Championship seasons, Newcastle would be top of the league with 85 points after 43 games – That shows just how competitive this season has been. I have said this many times this season, promotion is the priority – Ideally first or second, Newcastle are well on their way to achieving that, in the process they avoid the lottery that are the play-offs. The Championship is an extremely tough league to get out of, Norwich and Aston Villa are finding that out this season, as other teams have in the past.

Newcastle WILL gain automatic promotion, it is just a matter of when they will achieve it. With three games left, the good news is Newcastle fans do not have to suffer for too much longer! Rafael Benitez will be voicing his concerns to players on the training ground this week, he will give them a good talking to and remind them that a performance like against Ipswich, simply cannot happen again.

There is good news on the injury front for Newcastle, a welcome boost for their game against Preston. Both Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle look set to return. Clark has been a real miss for Newcastle, they have won just two games since his injury. Dwight Gayle meanwhile looks like he has shaken off another hamstring injury. Newcastle’s number nine will be hoping to fire Newcastle to the Premier League on Monday night, his goals have been invaluable for the club this season. Clark’s return will lift Benitez, Newcastle’s defence have looked very shaky without the Ireland international. Jamaal Lascelles looks so much more comfortable when partnered with Clark at the heart of the defence.

The defeat to Ipswich has seen a lot of fans take to social media to vent their frustrations. The performance was not good enough, however it is vital that everyone sticks together for the final three games. Newcastle fans could well be having a promotion part on Monday night! That is how close the club are to achieving promotion, yes recent results have not been great but Newcastle are almost there. The fans were excellent against Leeds United at St James’ Park, hopefully it will be more of the same – If not better against Preston.

Keep the faith Newcastle fans, the future is bright on Tyneside! I for one, cannot wait for our Premier League return next season.
