Newcastle United – A Summer of Change

After winning the Sky Bet Championship and a return to the Premier League, Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has been working around the clock on transfers.

Newcastle have already signed Christian Atsu, who was on loan at the club last season. The Ghanaian impressed over the course of a long hard season, Atsu can finally settle on Tyneside after a number of loan moves from Chelsea. Atsu will be determined to prove the likes of Chelsea, Bournemouth and Everton wrong, when he appears for the magpies in the Premier League. Atsu wasn’t given a fair chance, in fact he did not make a single appearance for Chelsea, at Everton he made 13 appearances in all competitions, while at Bournemouth he made just 2. The Ghana international will certainly have a point to prove, his quality is there for all to see and Benitez can get the best out of the player. For a fee in the region of £6M, in the overpriced market we find ourselves in today, that is a real bargain for Newcastle.

Promotion to the Premier League with a top class manager in Rafael Benitez, brings a lot of speculation regarding potential signings. There have been strong rumours surrounding defensive duo in, Eliaquim Mangala and Ruben Semedo. Benitez is eager to add 5 or 6 players by the time Newcastle begin pre-season training on July 3. With a workaholic like Benitez, fans can expect a few new faces in the next couple of weeks. The Newcastle manager will be determined to have all his targets through the door, by the time Newcastle play their first game back in the Premier League.

It is not just potential signings that have Newcastle fans intrigued. The potential list of outgoings at the club is also interesting, Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran aren’t expected to be handed new deals, while the likes of Grant Hanley, Matz Sels, Siem De Jong, Henri Saivet, Jesus Gamez, Massadio Haidara and Emanuel Riviere among others, could all leave St James’ Park this summer. Benitez is ruthless, he will not show any loyalties to those that helped the club gain promotion, although grateful for their services. Benitez knows he needs a squad capable of staying away from danger next season and building from there.

These are very exciting times for Newcastle United, they have everything they need, everything the fans have craved for years. A top class manager in Benitez, an owner in Mike Ashley willing to back the manager. Most importantly, Newcastle have a set of players who care about the club, players who are passionate and understand the values of Newcastle United. Benitez, will not only buy quality, but buy the right characters to fit in perfectly with the squad. Newcastle already have players capable of making the step up, there is quality in the squad. However, Benitez is aware the club cannot make the same mistakes as previous seasons, Newcastle simply can’t go into a Premier League campaign with a limited squad. Benitez has a project and every season he will continue to build on the squad.

The future looks bright for Newcastle, fans are no longer going into a season feeling nervous or anxious but excited about what is to come.
