Patience is Key For Newcastle United

Newcastle United players return for pre-season training today, as they prepare for life back in the Premier League. A number of supporters are becoming restless and unhappy at the lack of transfer activity at the club so far this summer. There have been a lot of players linked with a move to Tyneside this summer, with so much speculation and no movement it has put a lot of supporters on edge.

In a highly inflated transfer market, it is important for Newcastle to be patient. The club do not have the same amount of riches as the other Premier League teams, as the Magpies did not receive the astronomical amount of TV money last season, having played Championship football. We are now seeing the likes of Bournemouth and West Brom paying big fees for players, that does not mean Newcastle are being left behind at all – It just means, clubs who were in the Premier League last season have more money at their disposal. When the TV deal was announced it was obvious that the transfer market would be affected, for example, this time last year Nathan Ake would have gone for a lot less than £20 million. It is great for the less established clubs to have access to that amount of money, however as a result it over-inflates the market, making it very difficult for promoted clubs to sign the players they need quickly. That is where Newcastle stand at the moment.

Fans must be patient regarding signings, they will come but the club are in a difficult position. Being patient and getting the right player for the right price is key this summer, the club cannot pay over the odds for a player during this window as it will eat massively into Rafael Benitez’s budget. Providing Newcastle stay away from danger next season, you will see a different approach by the club in the transfer window next summer.

The constant media speculation regarding Benitez’s future does not help Newcastle fans’ nerves, unfortunately speculation will always surround the Spaniard because of how good he is. Very few people in the world of football expected Benitez to stay on at Newcastle following relegation, it just shows that the fans should not read too much into reports in the national press.

It is a little frustrating to see no new players report for pre-season training, but Newcastle will back Benitez it is just a case of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ new signings will appear. If you look around the Premier League clubs, most of them have only signed one or two players with the exception of Bournemouth, Watford, Everton, Huddersfield and Brighton who have all signed more than two new faces. Newcastle fans can expect transfer activity to happen in the coming days and weeks, now players are back from international duty and their holidays. The Magpies have rarely signed a player in June under Mike Ashley’s ownership, it is a very hard month to do deals with players being away.

It is a good thing that the club are being patient in the transfer window, we do not want to see players bought in for the sake of buying. They must be the right players, who fit Benitez’s style and who want to be at the club. Newcastle also have a big squad with players coming back from loan spells, Emmanuel Riviere, Henri Saivet, Tim Krul and Siem De Jong all come back to the club with uncertain future. Although the latter two have more of a future at Newcastle than the former two. The Magpies also have players such as Grant Hanley and Daryl Murphy who did a fantastic job for the club in the Championship, but will more than likely be moved on this summer. The club still have quite a lot of deadwood to shift in order to make way for new faces.

If fans thought that last summer was a big rebuild, think again. This summer is even bigger, Benitez wants at least 7 new signings and he will make sure the club delivers them. In the next few weeks, there is no doubt that fans will see a lot more activity from the club, both incomings and outgoings.
