Promotion Party Awaits Newcastle United

If Newcastle United beat Preston North End at St James’ Park tonight, there will be a P beside our name in the table, it would mean Newcastle have bounced straight back up to the Premier League.

The title may seem unlikely, however just gaining automatic promotion is an achievement in itself. With Huddersfield and Reading both losing at the weekend, Newcastle must capitalise and confirm their place in next season’s Premier League. The one thing I am looking forward to tonight is the noise from St James’ Park, the Geordie faithful should be bouncing tonight, I for one cannot wait.

Newcastle should by no means underestimate Preston, they are a decent side. After the results at the weekend though, you just get that feeling that this could be Newcastle’s night. The players should not need to be fired up for this one, win and they are Premier League players. Rafael Benitez has done a superb job at Newcastle, you cannot dislike the man, he has united a club and a set of fans that were divided for a long time. The problem Newcastle have had this season has been the weight of expectation, some of which has been far too high. There were a number of fans who said that Newcastle should walk the Championship, there was even talk of the Toon going unbeaten.

Newcastle may have strolled to the Championship trophy in 2009/10, however the league has become a lot stronger since then, as the club have found out this season. Many pointed to Rafael Benitez’s lack of experience in the lower leagues of football, he has certainly proved his critics wrong this season. The Spaniard did his homework in the summer and built a Newcastle side capable of bouncing straight back up. It was vital that the club bounced back the first time of asking. In fact Only Burnley have managed that from the last 15 teams relegated. That shows how hard this league really is.

What has impressed me about Newcastle this season is, they have had to overcome setbacks and have done so on numerous occasions. The poor officiating the club have endured and the injuries that have occurred – With all that and more, Newcastle are on the verge of the Premier League. There is a buzz around the club again, a buzz that hasn’t left since a smiling Benitez walked through the door last year. Benitez will allow himself to celebrate tonight, providing Newcastle win. A win for Newcastle will allow the team to play with more freedom in the final two games of the season.

The fans will play a big part in the result tonight, there is no doubt in that. There have been superb efforts made by Wor Hyem 1892 and Gallowgate Flags this season, in a bid to bring back the noise to St James’ Park. The fact that these two organisation are putting in so much effort, indicates how separated the club and fans have been in recent years. Now though, we can look forward to a bright future, Benitez will have a detailed plan for Newcastle in the Premier League, I can’t think of a better man to lead us in the top flight. Enjoy tonight, Newcastle United fans, make sure we hear the Geordie roar loud and clear, help the lads pick up the all important free points. Be the 12th man.
