Rafael Benitez is Building Something Special at Newcastle United

After reading the constant doom and gloom articles from the Chronicle since Saturday’s defeat to Fulham. I thought a positive view on things at St James’ Park was needed.

Saturday’s performance against Fulham may not have been up to the standards that Rafael Benitez expects, however it was just a bad day at the office – Nothing more. The Championship is a long, hard slog and many of the teams that come down from the Premier League struggle. Newcastle United are still top of the table, you wouldn’t have thought that when reading some of the articles over the last few days.

Benitez has added real belief into the Newcastle side. You have to take into account that he took charge of a team that was well and truly broken. Team morale was non-existent. If you compare the Newcastle side of this season to the one of last, it’s an incredible turn around. High profile players such as Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, Daryl Janmaat and Andros Townsend all left the club. Benitez signed players who would be suited to the Championship, the Newcastle manager did his research about the league. The likes of Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame were all signed by Benitez last summer. The Newcastle manager has created a fantastic atmosphere amongst the players and the fans.

Under previous managers, the likes of Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren there has been a real divide amongst the supporters. Benitez has brought a sense of togetherness, he has the club, players and fans all pulling in the same direction. That is something Newcastle haven’t had in a long time and long may it continue.

Newcastle are in a great position to gain promotion at the first time of asking. The season is reaching the business end, where anything can happen and lots of things can change. Newcastle wouldn’t want any other manager in the dugout than Benitez, he doesn’t leave anything to chance – He will guide Newcastle to the Premier League this season. The Newcastle manager has had a positive effect on players who looked to be on their way out of the club. Yoan Gouffran has been a regular this season, the player has been transformed under Benitez. Vurnon Anita is another one, most Newcastle fans wouldn’t have thought Anita or Gouffran would still be at St James’ Park this season. Both players have had fantastic seasons so far.

Benitez and his staff are not getting the credit they deserve. Newcastle was a sinking ship before Benitez arrived. The Spaniard even convinced owner Mike Ashley to hand him full control of footballing matters. Benitez is strong and wise enough to stand up to Mike Ashley, something that club have been crying out for since Ashley became the owner. Mike Ashley likes things done a particular way, however he has been blown away by Benitez and the positive impact the Spaniard has had on the club.

The football may not be pretty at times, however Benitez knows how to win. The Spaniard will carefully look at each opponent and play a team he thinks are capable of getting the job done. The fans should be excited about what Benitez can achieve at the club in the future, provided he has the full backing of an unpredictable owner.

As a Newcastle fan myself, it has really frustrated me reading negative articles over the last few days. The local papers have a big say in terms of the mood of the fans. Constantly churning out negative articles after a rare defeat will not do anyone any good. Benitez has worked tirelessly to bring back a sense of togetherness, the local papers should take that into account. When fans read articles of a negative nature, it is only natural that it will effect their mood, that then filters down onto the pitch. We are on the home straight of a long and hard season, everyone must be pulling in the same direction. Newcastle will obviously lose games, they can’t win every game. It is important that everyone remains as positive as possible following a defeat, that includes the local papers. I know they have a job to do, however I read an article this morning saying that Newcastle could be dragged out of the top two. Fans do not want to read that, it puts them on edge. Newcastle are still top of the league and Benitez is the best manager Newcastle have had in a long time. I am sure Benitez will get a reaction from his players against Birmingham City this weekend, he wants Newcastle to finish as Champions and he won’t settle for anything less.
