Huddersfield Feel The Pressure as Newcastle and Brighton Edge Closer

It was another frantic weekend in the Sky Bet Championship. The first victims of relegation were Rotherham as they were defeated 1-0 at home to Fulham.

Sone Aluko’s second half strike was enough to see off Rotherham has they became the first team of the season to have their fate sealed. The result for Fulham moved them above Sheffield Wednesday and into the final play-off position. Fulham took advantage of Sheffield Wednesday’s draw with Barnsley. Sheffield Wednesday appear to be struggling of late with one win in their last six games, a run of form that must come to an end if they are to reach the play-offs this season.

Championship leaders, Newcastle United maintained their lead at the top with a 2-1 win over struggling Wigan Athletic at St James’ Park. The win for Newcastle was their first in four matches, as they edge closer to an immediate return to the Premier League. Dwight Gayle scored his 22nd goal of the season, before Michael Jacobs had equalised. Matt Ritchie’s header gave Newcastle all three points. The result keeps Rafael Benitez’s side one point clear ahead of second placed Brighton.

Brighton picked up three points against relegation threatened Blackburn, thanks to Glenn Murray’s goal. Newcastle are ten points clear of third placed Huddersfield Town, Brighton are now nine ahead of them. Huddersfield suffered another defeat, this time at the hands of Burton Albion. It is safe to say Huddersfield are certainly feeling the pressure as they fall further behind the top two. Three defeats in their last six games has seen Huddersfield’s automatic promotion challenge falter.

In Saturday’s evening kick-off, Reading beat an in form Leeds side 1-0 at the Madejski stadium. It moves Reading above Leeds and into fourth place, one point behind Huddersfield. Despite the loss, Leeds look more than likely to finish in the play-off places this season. The last play-off place appears to be the one that is still uncertain, with a straight fight between Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday.

Bristol City remain one point above the drop zone after losing 2-0 to Brentford. Meanwhile, Aston Villa beat Norwich City 2-1, while Wolves beat Cardiff 3-1. Elsewhere there were draws 1-1 draws Nottingham Forest and Birmingham at Preston and Ipswich respectively.

With seven games left to play, there are still lots of things to be decided – Newcastle and Brighton continue to lead the way, with the top two looking to secure promotion to the top flight sooner rather than later. While the defeat for Wigan looks likely to have given them too much to do in their bid for survival. With Blackburn just a point from safety, the fight for survival looks set to continue – Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion are still in danger of relegation.

The final seven games of the Championship season look set to be as nervy and exciting as ever. The play-offs look set to be intriguing, with fantastic teams currently occupying the play-off places. We look forward to more excitement in the Championship, with a full round of fixtures in midweek.
