Arsenal Look to Pull Off The Impossible – Arsenal v Bayern

Arsenal face an uphill task if they are to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. If the Gunners pull off the near impossible, Arsenal would be in the quarter finals for the first time since 2010. Alexis Sanchez is set to return to the Arsenal starting line-up, after being left on the bench on Saturday. However, Mesut Ozil remains on the sidelines for Arsenal. Aaron Ramsey was an unused substitute for Arsenal at the weekend, Ramsey could feature for the Gunners tonight.

No team has progressed in a Champions League tie after losing the first leg by four or more goals. That is the task that Arsenal face. The Gunners were poor in the first leg and against Liverpool at the weekend. Arsenal cannot afford to perform like that again tonight, if they do the scoreline will not be a positive one. The decision to leave Sanchez out at the weekend backfired on Arsene Wenger. He simply cannot make decision of that magnitude in the position he finds himself in. However, the way football is – if Arsenal won at the weekend and Giroud scored a couple, Wenger would have been seen as a tactical genius.

Arsenal fans have been in this situation many times before, they see their team get beaten comfortably in the first leg, then end up winning the second leg to redeem themselves – going out of the competition with some dignity still intact. I would not be be surprised if that turned out to be the case again tonight.

Bayern had key players Mats Hummels, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Xabi Alonso all on the bench for the win over Cologne on Saturday and all four are set to return. The German side have won just one of their last six Champions League away games, losing three and drawing twice in that run; however their three defeats all came by a single goal.

I can see Arsenal winning this game, however they have left themselves with far too much to do in regards to progressing to the quarter finals. It is a big game for Arsene Wenger, lose this game and the pressure gets cranked up even more on him. Wenger needs to prove to the fans that he is still the man for the job. The way Arsenal finish the season, will have a big say on whether Wenger remains at the Emirates or not.

Prediction: Arsenal 2 Bayern 1

Ones to watch: Arsenal – Alexis Sanchez
Bayern – Arjen Robben
