Captain Kompany

Vincent Kompany returned to the Manchester City starting line-up against Southampton at St. Mary’s yesterday. The Belgium international who has been plagued by injuries in the past few seasons, made a scoring return.

Kompany opened the scoring against Southampton in the second half with a trademark header. Up until that point Southampton were in the game, Kompany’s goal changed the whole complexion of the game and City went on to win comfortably 3-0. It is clear that Kompany makes a huge difference to the Manchester City side, it is vital that the club try to keep him fit – His influence on City is huge.

I have said for much of the season, Vincent Kompany would be the ideal partner for John Stones. The youngster has a lot to learn in the game, he has plenty of potential, who better to learn from than Vincent Kompany? When fit, Kompany is by far one of the best defenders in the Premier League. His leadership qualities, positioning, ruthlessness and pure defensive skill are what Manchester City have missed for the majority of the season. Yesterday was Kompany’s fifth appearance of the season.

I hope Kompany can stay fit for a long period of time now, he has had his fair share of injury woes – If anyone deserves to stay injury free for a while, it’s Kompany. I honestly believe if Kompany was a constant in the City side this season, the club would be much closer to Chelsea than they are now – Such is his influence on the team.

Every team needs a leader, one who can rally the players around him, Kompany is a terrific captain both on and off the field. Pep Guardiola likes his teams to play out from the back, Kompany proved he has the passing ability to play the Guardiola way. Manchester City have looked very nervy at the back on a number of occasions this season, mainly due to the lack of communication and leadership. With Kompany in the heart of the defence the whole team looks a lot more assured. Kompany’s presence may just give the Manchester City goalkeeper’s more confidence. The Goalkeeping department has been a real issue for City this season, Guardiola allowed Joe Hart to leave on loan – Bringing in Claudio Bravo, a goalkeeper who has struggled to adapt to the Premier League. Guardiola has turned to Willy Caballero as well this season, he too is prone to a mistake or two. However, with a consistently outstanding centre back in front of them, the goalkeeper’s nerves may ease a little.

Guardiola will be hoping Kompany has put his injury troubles behind him, a fit Vincent Kompany marshalling that City defence will go a long way in their pursuit of trophies next season.

Welcome back Vincent!
