Huddersfield Reach Premier League After Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Huddersfield Town have been promoted to the Premier League after defeating Reading at Wembley. Reading’s playoff final nightmare continued against Huddersfield, a game that was certainly not a classic. Goalless after 120 minutes, Izzy Brown had the best chance of the game – Somehow missing from close range, it was harder to miss than score.

The win for Huddersfield caps a fantastic season for David Wagner’s side. Nobody thought the club would even be in contention for a place in the Premier League at the start of the season. However, Wagner put together a squad of players that have shown a lot fight, grit, determination and most of all, quality to reach the Premier League. For Reading, it means another season in the Sky Bet Championship after a heartbreaking defeat on penalties. The Reading players will need some time to get over the manner of this defeat, there will be no doubt that Reading will be strong contenders next season.

As extra time approached, it was clear that both sides had run out of ideas, both had given everything and it was just a case of running down the clock for penalties. It is in games like this, ones that are filled with pressure and nervous tension, that extra time should not be played – In my opinion the game should go straight to penalties.

The first player to fail from the spot was Hefele, as he saw his penalty saved by Al-Habsi to leave Reading 2-1 up in the shootout. However, Moore blazed his effort over the bar and Mooy converted, to leave the score at 3-3 going into the final round. Obita then saw his penalty saved by Ward, Schindler stepped up to score the crucial penalty that sent Huddersfield to the Premier League.

On reflection, it is only right that Huddersfield reached the Premier League. The club have been magnificent all season, it does not take anything away from the job Jaap Stam has done at Reading. However, Huddersfield pushed Newcastle and Brighton hard for much of the season. The terriers now join the magpies and seagulls in England’s top flight. There will be much celebration from the Huddersfield players, staff and fans over the next few days, it will not be long before they find out their fixtures for the Premier League season.

Congratulations to Huddersfield, commiserations to Reading. That concludes yet another long hard slog of a season in the Sky Bet Championship, there is no finer place to conclude the season than Wembley stadium.
