Letting Wilshere leave on loan is coming back to haunt Arsenal

As I was watching Arsenal be completely dominated by Bayern Munich last night, I looked at Arsenal’s midfield and thought to myself – surely Jack Wilshere would start the game if the club hadn’t loaned him out to Bournemouth. The midfield consisted of Granit Xhaka, Alex Iwobi, Alex Oxlade -Chamberlain, Francis Coquelin and Mesut Özil.

I understand the reasoning behind Wilshere’s loan move, however Arsene Wenger surely would have realised that the Englishman was needed this season. I can’t speak for Arsenal fans, in my opinion Wilshere is a far better option than Xhaka, Iwobi and Oxlade – Chamberlain. Arsenal lacked a number of things last night, the Arsenal midfield is the main thing that jumped out at me.

While Wilshere can pick up his fair share of injuries, it would have been better for the club if Wilshere stayed and built up his fitness at the Emirates. Of course if Wilshere did play last night – he may not have had any effect on the outcome of the game, however he gives something different to Arsenal, he adds a bit of toughness and creativity to the midfield. Özil can drift in and out of games and without Santi Cazorla, Arsenal are crying out for another option in the middle of the park.

If Wenger is to stay at Arsenal beyond this season, he must strengthen in the summer. I think most Arsenal fans will agree that the club need additions all over the field. If the club are serious about winning the Premier League once again, then they must give Arsene Wenger money to strengthen.

The players have to take some of the responsibility, Arsene Wenger could have opted out of an interview after last night’s game but he chose to face the media. It’s time some of the players come out in support of a man who has given a lot to the club. If it is to be Wenger’s last season in charge, the players should give everything to finish the season on a high note.
