Luke Shaw Deserves Better

Jose Mourinho criticised full back Luke Shaw over the weekend. Shaw’s commitment and ambitions were questioned by the Manchester United manager. The left back was once again omitted from Mourinho’s match-day squad for the goalless draw against West Brom.

Mourinho has previous in his criticism of his players, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan subject to his manager’s wrath earlier in the campaign. I do get the sense that Mourinho is trying to get some fight out of Shaw, however it doesn’t work like that for every player. Luke Shaw has had some terrible injuries recently and he hasn’t been involved with Manchester United much, you do have to question why, there must be something going on.

To question a players commitment and ambitions is a very harsh thing to do. Shaw who is already low on confidence needs support from his manager not criticism. The England international has fantastic ability and a great career ahead of him, I just hope Mourinho doesn’t completely destroy his confidence. Shaw has started just seven Premier League games this season, while a broken leg ruled him out of the majority of Louis van Gaal’s final year at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw’s commitment should never be questioned, his biggest weakness would be his fear of another serious injury occurring. Maybe that fear means he pulls out of challenges without realising, that is only natural for a player who has been out for so long. Shaw will be back to his best, he needs the game time to be able to do that. Mourinho is a great manager, there is no question about that. However his management of some of his players is unacceptable at times. If he wishes to get the best out of Luke Shaw he needs to support the youngster. People forget that Shaw is only 21, he has been around for a few years now but he is still a young player with much to learn.

If Mourinho does not change his man management style he could end up being in the same situation as he was with Bastian Schweinsteiger. The German recently left Old Trafford after being frozen out at the club, he has moved to the MLS where he made an instant impact as he scored on his debut for Chicago Fire. Mourinho see the talent that Shaw possesses, if the manager continues down this road – Shaw could well be the latest name to be leaving the club.
