Moussa Sissoko worth 30 million? I wouldn’t pay 30 pence

Moussa Sissoko continues his nightmare at Tottenham. The Frenchman often angered Newcastle United fans during his three years at the club. Sissoko gave a number of interviews to French media, insisting he should be playing for a Champions League club. He eventually got his wish last summer when Tottenham Hotspur paid an astonishing thirty million pounds for the midfielder.

Although Sissoko had a very good Euro 2016, he rarely impressed during his time at Newcastle. Only putting in good performances when it suited him. His lack of effort angered Newcastle fans, the club needed their big names to perform to avoid relegation from the Premier League last season, Moussa Sissoko’s lack of effort was one of the reasons for Newcastle’s relegation.

The Frenchman has shown that he can be a fantastic player – when he wants to be. That is a massive problem for any player, he played well in Euro 2016 because he knew his performances would catch the eye of clubs around the world. His willingness to force through a transfer from Newcastle was disgusting. Newcastle fans couldn’t believe their eyes when Tottenham paid the ridiculous amount of money for him. Magpies fans were quick to warn Tottenham fans what they were about to witness this season.

Newcastle fans have been proved right in their criticism of the midfielder. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has not been impressed with what he has seen of the Frenchman so far this season. The Tottenham manager admitted that Sissoko was not living up to the expectations. On 28th November last year Pochettino said: “If you sign a player and you expect something, and you do not find what you expect, and if another deserves to be involved, like Georges-Kevin N’Koudou or Vincent Janssen, then why [do we play another]? Because we paid money we need to put the player to play?

Spurs fans have also been very critical of Sissoko, with the majority wondering why the club would pay such a high amount for such an average player. From what I witnessed during the midfielder’s time at Newcastle, he had done nothing to suggest he was worth anywhere near thirty million pounds. This is a player who completely lacked professionalism at a club that gave him so much. His constant interviews, trying to instigate a move away from the club at every given opportunity was disgraceful.

Sissoko needs to learn that he will never be bigger than the club he plays for. Before moving to Spurs last summer, during one of Sissoko’s many, many interviews he declared that it would be a dream to play for a club like Arsenal. This was enough to anger Spurs fans before he even arrived at White Hart Lane.  Sissoko moved to Tottenham on deadline day, a day where he looked set to move to Everton. His behaviour on deadline day came as no surprise to the fans who had paid their hard earned money to watch him each week. Everton manager Ronald Koeman had tried to call the midfielder a number of times, each call was ignored by Sissoko. Koeman called the Frenchman to confirm whether he was on his way to Everton.

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson slammed Sissoko’s behaviour by saying: “I watched him at Newcastle last year, he stayed out on the wing and didn’t do anything,” Merson continued: “When you’re that good you’ve got to be able to do something out of the ordinary to get your team out of it as that’s what top players do. I wouldn’t have been putting my £30m on him. “He was playing in front of 50,000 Geordies, if you can’t get up for that, when are you ever going to get up for playing a football match.”It’s unreal he can’t even answer Ronald Koeman’s call. What’s the game coming to? This man is a legend for what he’s done in football and he can’t even pick the phone up and say ‘I don’t really want to sign for you, sorry!'”

I do not see Sissoko playing his football at Tottenham next season, Pochettino has already realised that it was a mistake to bring the player to the club. Tottenham could have got so much more for their money, the signing of Sissoko seemed a bit like a panic buy. After another disappointing display in the Europa League in the week, prompting former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp to ask what Sissoko did during the game.

Tottenham fans would have been hoping for the Sissoko they saw during Euro 2016, unfortunately they have ended up with the Sissoko that continuously failed to perform for Newcastle over three years.

Don’t worry though Spurs fans, Pochettino is smart enough to know when a player isn’t good enough for the club. There have been rumours that AC Milan are interested in ending Sissoko’s Tottenham nightmare.

As a Newcastle fan, I feel your pain Spurs fans. At least you have a manager there that will not start him every game, so the pain of watching Sissoko will not be as hard or as often.
